Y could have been Yuva Bharati Stadium in Salt Lake famous for its sporting events or the Yellow taxi that has an old world charm about it. But this series is not just about bringing back nostalgia but also aims to provide the latest updates in the city. Hence the one that makes it to my featured post of the day is the fine-dining restaurant Yauatcha.
Located on 5th floor of Quest Mall inSyed Amir Ali Avenue, Yauatcha is the first Michelin star restaurant of the city. This restaurant with its origin in London had already opened branches in Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore prior to its launch in Kolkata. It has a bar and dining area. There is also an enclosed area for private dining and private parties that can host around thirty people.
Tangra is rightly known as the China Town of Kolkata. The moment one enters the lanes, it is easy to figure out the reason. A food lover, specially that of authentic Chinese cuisines is spoilt for choices. Ever since I started exploring Kolkata restaurants, I have visited China Town multiple times and somehow Kim Ling became a personal favorite over the years. Over the New year weekend, it was close to 4 pm when we entered the restaurant for lunch. In no time, all the tables were full and the place was abuzz with activities. That goes to speak volumes about the popularity of this place amidst the old and new generation alike.
The city of Joy celebrates every festival with equal vigor and enthusiasm. Park Street area in Kolkata is where people flock to celebrate Christmas and New Year. The area beautifully decorated with lights, trees has an ongoing street food festival during this period. With the variety of restaurants available, this can safely be labelled as a food lover’s paradise. Over the Christmas weekend, we decided to brave the crowd of Park Street and head towards one of the best options for fine dining in the city – Marco Polo.
A chance visit to the Swasthya Bhawan (the administrative building of health department) got us delayed in some paper work yesterday. Following the age old proverb ‘necessity is the mother of invention’, our famished selves discovered this restaurant within half a km of this building.
Lake Lite is a restaurant quite popular among the office goers of Salt lake and New Town. The location makes it accessible for working professionals to have a quick lunch. They have an open bar and the alcohol is quite cheap, making this place a favorite hang out joint for after office parties. The restaurant was nearly full on a Friday afternoon. Since we were in a hurry, we decided to have just the soft drinks in the restaurant and get the food packed instead. Continue reading “Restaurant review – Lake Lite, Kolkata “
Town restaurant is located very near to Axis Mall. It is barely a five minute walk from the main gate of the mall. During one such overcrowded weekends at the mall, we decided to skip the option of dining at a mall restaurant and chose the nearest option of Town restaurant. Along with our toddler, we were two couples heading towards a new gastronomic adventure.
Despite it being a Saturday evening, the place was almost deserted initially barring a young couple at one of the tables. The restaurant is located on the first floor and they have a functional lift facility. On entering the restaurant, the poor lighting of the place creates a huge negative impact. Families are encouraged to occupy the air conditioned part of the restaurant situated farthest from the entrance, the portions separated by a door. We took up two tables in this area. Mainland China is located on the third floor of Avani Riverside mall in Howrah. My husband and I have lunched quite often in this outlet whenever we have been to this part of the city. On a weekday, one can directly walk in for lunch or dinner while it is always recommended to have a reservation over the weekend.
Having stayed in Bangalore for over a decade, we are extremely familiar and delighted with the hospitality of Speciality group restaurants, specially the outlets of Mainland China in Koramangala and Church Street. Thus there’s an inevitable comparison that follows. Sadly, I must say that this outlet really needs to scale up on quite a few parameters in this aspect. My husband and I first visited this place in the month of July and have been regulars ever since. Located on the top floor of Quest mall, it is recommended to reserve a table before visiting. The place has a beautiful ambiance, specially the view from the glass panes overlooking the busy streets of Kolkata. They pride themselves on being a Michelin star restaurant and they have all the reasons to do so. In our first visit, we were not very familiar with the options to choose from. The steward, based on our preferences suggested us the food items and boy they were yummylicious. We had our 2year old son with us and the staffs went a step ahead to get few food items customized for him-like no spice, a little more boiled than usual. The service is class apart.
