Destination one – Peter Cat restaurant (Exploring Kolkata in a day series)
Last month, we finally managed to find a day when the kid had a holiday, I didn’t have pending writing work, and it was a day off from duty for the husband. So, we took the kid out to explore the city of joy. Since it was peak summer season, we left around noon to eat at our favorite restaurant, the heritage place called Peter Cat at Park Street. After many decades, the eatery is still relevant amidst severe competition. It’s noteworthy that the joint hasn’t lost its nostalgic touch.
I won’t get into details about the history of the place since a lot is available on the net. But it’s essential to mention that this is one of our frequent places to visit and the quality of food stays consistent and unmatched. While we had fish makhmali and dum ki rann for starters, let me share pictures of two iconic dishes synonymous with this eatery – Chelo Kebab and Mixed Tandoori Grill sizzler (our choice for the main course dishes).

A dollop of Bengal – Yauatcha
Y could have been Yuva Bharati Stadium in Salt Lake famous for its sporting events or the Yellow taxi that has an old world charm about it. But this series is not just about bringing back nostalgia but also aims to provide the latest updates in the city. Hence the one that makes it to my featured post of the day is the fine-dining restaurant Yauatcha.
Yauatcha –
Located on 5th floor of Quest Mall in Syed Amir Ali Avenue, Yauatcha is the first Michelin star restaurant of the city. This restaurant with its origin in London had already opened branches in Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore prior to its launch in Kolkata. It has a bar and dining area. There is also an enclosed area for private dining and private parties that can host around thirty people.

A dollop of Bengal – Outram Ghat
O can be labelled as an important alphabet in Bengali vocabulary. The pronunciation of quite a few words alter under the strong influence of this alphabet. For example, Amitabh Bachchan is pronounced as Omitabho Bochchon, Sachin becomes Sochin and Arijit Singh is Orijit Singh. For the feature, Oudh 1590 – the famous Awadhi cuisine restaurant in Kolkata, Oshtomir Onjoli – the integral part of Pushpanjali on the morning of Durga ashtami, Oxford Bookstore with a coffee shop on Park Street were the few options that were being considered. But the one that makes it to the list is one of the famous ghats in the city – Outram Ghat.
Outram Ghat –
Outram Ghat is a ghat built-in memory of Sir James Outram during the British era, along the river bank of Hooghly (a distributary of Ganges river) on its bank of the Kolkata. During colonial era it used to be a key port and the main mooring point for ships to East Bengal and Burma.
Theme Reveal A2Z challenge with Blogchatter
The A2Z blogging challenge with Blogchatter is all about blogging on every single day through April except on Sundays. So essentially there’s an alphabet associated with every single day. A on the first day, B on the second and so on until it’s Z on the twenty-sixth day. When I took up this challenge, I had already been posting two to four blog posts every week. However it looked like a Herculean task to post every single day and that too on the basis an alphabet. I felt challenged and there’s no best way to overcome the fear than to face it. So, here I go with my theme reveal of my first ever A2Z challenge.
Through a series of twenty-six posts, I am going to help the readers enjoy a journey down my state West Bengal through ‘A dollop of Bengal’. My blog belongs to a multi-niche category and through this theme, I intend to cover cities, places, food, restaurants, personalities, characters, festivals and a lot more that define this state. So that looks like a huge list right?
Wait, there’s a twist! Among the multiple options in various categories starting with any particular alphabet, I am going to choose and write only about the one that has a connection to my life. Stay tuned to know who makes it to the list and what is their significance in my journey.
I am waiting to make this my biggest project till date. Can’t wait for you to come sooner, April to get this started.
