I discovered Gaurav Kapoor through one of his epic YouTube videos on Royal Enfield bikes. This video made him quite famous though it also invited some hate comments (the sassy performer went ahead and made a second part on this issue). This witty comedian with a sharp sense of humor is found speaking on topics ranging from smartphones to destination weddings, Lifebuoy soaps, motorcycles and Bollywood in a hilarious tone. He prefers to call himself a storyteller and manages to find light-hearted fun content even in the most mundane things. He was selected to open for the show of international comedy sensation Russel Brand in India.

Kapoor is considered as one of the rising stand-up comedians in the country. His top-notch performance has already earned him a debut stand-up special show on Amazon Prime called ‘Hahakaar.’

Naveen Richard is one of the founder-members of the comedy collective ‘Them Boxer Shorts” attributed to the creation of the show ‘Better Life Foundation’. Along with Kenny Sebastian, Naveen has co-written and acted in the show Star Boyz. There are a bunch of videos on his YouTube channel that take a sarcastic dig at real-life issues of Godmen, moral policing, and stereotyping people. What is unique about those videos is that they manage to deliver the underlying message in a subtle and funny way without getting too preachy. He has also played the role of an annoying child in the sketch comedy ‘Go Stright, Take Left’ with Sumukhi Suresh.

Of all the characters that Naveen has created or acted in, my favorite happens to Uncle Francis or rather Fraaanjiis as he prefers to be known as. Navin’s intelligent humor makes him stand-out from the crowd. Yet, his actor persona overshadows the comedian within him in shows like the Pushapavalli series created by Sumukhi Suresh. This is where his versatility as an artist shines through. Naveen his debut on Amazon Prime with his stand-up special ‘Don’t make that face’ and is now back with a brand new show ‘Relatively Relatable.’
This is the fourteenth post in the Blogchatter A2Z challenge based on the theme ‘Laugh in the time of Corona.’ I hope to see you tomorrow when I divulge the details of the performer getting featured in my post for ‘O’.
You can read the previous posts in the series here. Here’s a video from Naveen’s latest special that is sure to make one go LOL.
Kenny Sebastian was my introduction to the Indian stand-up comedy world. The first video that I watched on his YouTube channel was about the behavior of Indian middle-class parents at a restaurant. I was hooked to the videos there for the next four days. His content, mostly delivered in English, is so full of expressions and body movements that it feels as good as watching him live in action. Kenny is also a talented singer and a few of his old acoustic cover videos capture him playing the guitar while singing songs. He does sit-down live comedy through ‘Chai time with Kenny’ series where he interacts with a live audience. Kenny has acted in comedy sketches, been a part of comedy shows like Comedy Central and humor series as Star Boyz covering the journey of three south Indian boys in space. He is also into vlogs that give a sneak-peek into his personal life and track his travel diaries.

Kenny’s content is easily relatable and draws inspiration from the simple things of life making his humor effortless. He has a solo stand-up special ‘Don’t Be That Guy’ and a 7-episode original series called ‘Die trying’ on Amazon Prime. He has been a part of Comicstann – Season 1. This multi-talented performer runs a podcast and has also launched his own brand of merchandise.
This is the 11th post in the Blogchatter A2Z series under the theme ‘Laugh in the time of Corona.’ Stay tuned to know who gets featured tomorrow in my post for L.

I chanced upon the YouTube channel of Jordinidian when one of their videos came as a recommendation on a different comedy channel. Two friends, Nasser Azzeh from Jordan and Vineeth Kumar aka ‘Beep’ from India created this channel to showcase funny sketch comedy videos. They have a huge collection of hilarious videos in the categories of ‘Types of’ (savage dads, savage moms, friends, students, and many more). In the past couple of years, they also experimented with a couple of music videos, out of ‘smoke shisha, play Fifa’ anthem became a viral sensation.

This channel has become my personal favorite because of the Bangalore connection. Having spent more than a decade in Karnataka (Bangalore and Mysore), their accent, observation of the happenings in the city and the South Indian culture feels familiar, relatable and on point. However, what makes them unique is that they exercise caution not to stereotype characters in their sketches. It is also commendable that their content is devoid of offensive and abusive language, making their videos a perfect watch for families.
This is the 10th post in the Blogchatter A2Z series under the theme ‘Laugh in the time of Corona’. I hope to see you on Monday when I reveal the name of the stand-up comedian getting featured in my post for ‘K’.

Appurv Gupta is more famous as the indomitable Gupta J(I) in the comedy circuit. A couple of years ago, I stumbled upon his YouTube channel that had a host of his rib-tickling stand-up videos. The content felt relatable because he spoke about the corporate world and his life experiences in the funniest possible way. In 2014, CNN IBN had lauded him as one of the top 20 Best stand-up comedians to look out for. With time, he has matured as a comedian with his content getting better, making him a widely popular choice as a national level performer. Yet what makes him unique is that he is unabashedly comfortable cracking self-deprecating jokes. The way Appurv Gupta has re-branded himself as Gupta Ji to become one of the most sought out stand-up comedians in the country deserves to be analyzed as a B-school case study.

In India, we see only a handful of comedians interact with a live audience with elan and humor. Gupta Ji has aced this game by sticking to inoffensive humor. Also, a special mention to the series of brilliant interviews he showcased on his channel including the iconic Padma Shri Professor Dr. H.C. Verma and Mathematician Dr. R.D. Sharma.

‘Humorously Yours’ is a hilarious web series from the TVF group that tracks the life saga of a stand-up comedian played by Vipul Goyal and Rasika Duggal enacting the role of his wife, Kavya. In the second season of this web series, we find a relatively famous Vipul playing the double role of the stand-up comedian and his imaginary manager, Ranjit Walia. How he commits a mistake and escapes unscathed is shown through subtle humor and relatable characters in the series.

Over time, I found that their YouTube channel by the same name had a handful of stand-up comedy videos by the funny Vipul Goyal. He manages to make the audience laugh out loud with his humor that draws huge inspiration from the simple things of life. At times he is also found taking a jibe at the current stifling environment in the democracy without getting offensive about issues. A special mention to his voice and unique dialog delivery (there’ an uncanny resemblance to the Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt) that tops the humor quotient. Lastly, he belongs to the rare breed of Indian stand-up comedians who stick to non-abusive language while spreading happiness through his shows.

I discovered Abijit Ganguly through the controversy of Kapil Sharma lifting one of his jokes for his show without giving Ganguly any credit. I found a bunch of his stand-up comedy videos on his YouTube channel. But it is in the last few months that I have become a huge admirer of his strong content. Straight faced dialog delivery with expressive eyes, his jokes hit a solid punch on the face of our hypocrite society. He is opinionated and is often trolled for his bold views but keeps getting better at taking those offensive comments in his stride to create an impactful content again.

Married to a Gujarati, this Bengali performer speaks humorously about mundane things like his cross-cultural marriage, the concept of millennial couples, funny side of friendships just like he manages to effortlessly switch over to the current political situation in the country. His words make much more sense than most of the politicians in power today. Watch the video at the end of my post for confirmation

TVF is a familiar name for those who thrive on web series. They are the pioneers for leading the change in the mode of entertainment in India. A huge number of the population, especially the youth, desired for better quality shows than what the TV serials were offering. TVF captured this market through shows like ‘Barely speaking with Arnub’and ‘Permanent Roommates’. Over time, the quality of their content grew better just like the aging of fine wine. In the last few years, TVF has been associated with creating shows like ‘TVF Pitchers’, ‘TVF Tripling’, ‘Chai Sutta Chronicles’, ‘Tech conversations with Dad’, ‘Bisht please’, ‘Humorously Yours’, ‘Fathers’, ‘Bachelors’, ‘Inmates’, ‘Awkward conversation with parents’ among many others. The underlying connecting factor for most of the shows is a generous dose of relatable humor.

The brand started exploring different genres like family stories (Yeh Mera Family), new generation romance (Flames), corporate life saga (Cubicles), harsh realities of the education sector (‘Kota Factory’ – one of the best series Indian content creators have ever produced) and the latest buzz creator ‘Panchayat’ (giving a sneak-peek into rural India).
TVF has 7 million subscribers on its YouTube channel. It also has a live app TVF play. A bunch of their shows has been successfully running on Netflix (‘Yeh Meri Family’, ‘Engineering Girls’, ‘Girls Hostel’, ‘Collage Romance’ and ‘Inmates’) and Amazon Prime (‘Kota Factory’, ‘Panchayat’).

A couple of years ago, the company had faced flak for the supposed involvement of their founder Arunabh Kumar in sexual harassment case but the management underwent an internal restructuring to facilitate Dhawal Gusain, Karan Chowdhry and Sameer Saxena steer it back to creating quality content and successful shows. TVF has also given the industry a host of talented actors like Jitendra Kumar (Jeetu), Sumeet Vyas, Shivankit Parihar, Ahsas Channa, among many others.

The dynamic group was one of the first few joint collaborative efforts of 7 Indian stand-up comedians Atul Khatri, Sorabh Pant, Sapan Verma, Sahil Shah, Angad Singh Ranyal, Azeem Banatwalla, and Kunal Rao. After Atul Khatri and Sorabh Pant left the channel, the rest of the five comedians have been running the show and taking pot-boilers at the current political and socio-economic situation in the country through their YouTube channel.

The performers also have their solo shows on the channel where they speak about relatable content. On Amazon Prime, Sapan Verma has his stand up special called ‘Obsessive Comedic Disorder’, Azeem Banatwalla’s show is titled ‘Cometh The Hour’ and Angad Singh Ranyal tickles the funny bone with ‘Kaafi Filmy.’ But what is unique about this channel is that it extends its spread to include musical comedies, sketches, talk shows about Bollywood and charchas on relevant topics. My favorites on this channel are the outrage videos where one of the comedians speaks on uncomfortable topics like trolling, animal abuse, SSC scam, inaccessible India among many others.
