B for Biswa Kalyan Rath

The first time I watched Biswa Kalyan Rath, more popularly known as Biswa was on the hilarious Bollywood review series called Pretentious movie reviews where he shared the stage with Kanan Gill.  I watched a couple of his videos on his YouTube channel and was blown away by the way he found humor in the mundane things. Next came his stand-up special ‘Biswa mast aadmi’ on Amazon Prime. One look at the video and the introduction is bound to crack people up. He spoke about his childhood, his parents (his father Jagan Mohan Rath became a famous character), regular topics like booking an Uber and managed to keep the audience entertained till the last joke. What was unique about the show was that he hardly took any pause between the segments.

He has made a special appearance in a couple of shows like ‘Better life Foundation.’ but it was after he turned a story writer and creator with the show ‘Laakhon Mein Ek’ that Biswa went beyond his stand-up comic persona to showcase the versatile artist within. Both the seasons of the show on Amazon prime dealt with the harsh realities of life but were packed with sarcasm and dark humor. The IIT-Kharagpur alumnus has also been a judge on various seasons of comicstaan and was last seen in his second stand-up solo on Amazon prime titled ‘Sushi’. Biswa’s words have the endearing aspect of being relatable while delivering a punch under the veil of humor.

This is the second post in the BlogchatterA2Z challenge under the theme ‘Laugh in the time of Corona’ I hope to see you tomorrow as I reveal the one who gets featured in my third post for C.

You can read my previous post in the series here. Don’t forget to enjoy humor in Biswa’s style in the video below.

Author: Sonia Chatterjee

Who am I? An erstwhile banker turned blogger/writer/author. Any qualifications? A Post-Graduate degree in Chemistry followed by a second Post-Graduate Diploma in Management. I completed a one-year MFA in creative writing course from the Writer's Village University, U.S. in Dec 2020. Though I must admit that I am still trying to figure out how and when I can connect all these dots. Have I done any real work? If two years in market research, six years in banking as a branch head, three-plus years of blogging, writing, and publishing a book can be considered as real work, then yes! Where do I live? After spending life like a nomad for sixteen years in Delhi, Bangalore & Mysore, I am back to where it all started from - Kolkata. My favorite things - Books, coffee, travel, food, and my five-year-old son. What is this blog about? Through Sonia's musings, I intend to explore writing in various genres, create social awareness, spread laughter, and give words to emotions. Anything for readers? You can check out my book 'Deal of Death' on Amazon Kindle. If you like fast-paced thrillers, this Detective fiction introducing the woman sleuth, Raya Ray could turn out to be your perfect weekend read.

  4. Was honestly waiting for this post. You made my day. Biswa is my favorite Indian Comic. I went for his Live shows in Bandra Laugh Club quite a few times. He is magnetic on stage. He makes the audience comfortable and uncomfortable at the same time. During his live shows he picks up random people from the audience and if you are his pick then you are gone. Did you know he even acted in a movie called Brahmanaman, and another small web series. Thanks for this post dearie.

  5. Absolutely hilarious fellow. I wish there were more ‘pretentious movie reviews’. That was an excellent series with so few episodes in the end

  7. Haha laugh in the time of Corona. I like that. I’m taking up the serious version of this as my theme so we need people like you to balance it. I haven’t watched much of Biswa’s thanks to your post, I know where to start. I think I’ve always been a Kenny Seb and Kanan gill fan.

  8. Oh..why couldn’t they continue Pretentious Movie Reviews!! I love Kenny’s sketches more but Biswa was hilarious in Biswa Mast Aadmi . Great that you are putting this together during such stressed-out times.

  9. He’s really witty, but sometimes his jokes are too intelligent to find funny. Yes, Pretentious Movie Reviews was hillarious, but it was because of his wavelength with Kanan Gill.

He’s a really talented writer though.

Btw, since we’re on letter B, you should check out Anubhav Singh Bassi. 🙂

    Do drop by mine.
