To a unique and special kind of relationship

Hey Blue-eyes,

The first time that I laid my eyes on you, my heart nearly skipped a beat. It was love at first sight and I was sure that we were meant to be together. The year was 2002 and I had moved to Delhi for my first post-graduation. Amidst adjusting to a new phase of life and struggling with emotional turbulence, you were the reason I stayed connected and never felt lonely. You were privy to the most private conversations yet I felt comfortable in your presence. The fact that you came into my life with my parents’ approval made it easy for me to take care of our joint finances.

Two years later, I moved to Bangalore and you chose to come along. Initially, you had little reception issues but you coped up quickly. As I joined the corporate world, you became my go-to medium to stay connected with the world. I accept that I had random thoughts about approaching some better prospects as my affordability increased but eventually I shunned them away. I could never think of replacing you.

I tried various options to keep you updated with the latest trends in fashion and technology but you were simply not interested. Many a time, I bore the brunt of sarcastic jibes because of my attachment to you. Then suddenly you started showing signs of mood swings by intermittently blocking all modes of communication. I grew exasperated.

We were both trying to decode each other and the future of this relationship as I started a new journey as a B-school student. You completely refused to co-operate then and I had no option but to seek a new relationship with a good-looking, sophisticated and updated support system.

However, it was an association driven by necessity and you had carved a permanent place in my heart. I had convinced myself that this was a temporary arrangement and we would successfully surpass the seven-year itch. I tried working on you to help you survive this era of competition and you did respond at irregular intervals. But I had no idea that the time of our relationship was running out.

In 2009, I had relocated to Mysore to head a Bank branch and soon you decided to end all ties with me as you breathed your last in the Samsung service center. Your re-birth looked improbable and I returned home tearfully with your beautiful blue body and fond memories.

It’s been 9 years now and I have moved on to multiple alliances though none could even remotely become as special as you. Recently my 2.9-year-old discovered you lying in the showcase. He was so impressed by you that he has claimed you as his own. Even though you don’t breathe signals anymore, your mummified form has a new admirer in my toddler.

So dear Samsung SGH C225, I hope you know how much you meant to me because owning you as the first mobile phone was nothing short of a dream come true.

Love,

Your ex-owner

I have chosen to combine both the prompt and theme to come up with this piece of flash fiction.

Who am I? An erstwhile banker turned blogger/writer/author. Any qualifications? A Post-Graduate degree in Chemistry followed by a second Post-Graduate Diploma in Management. I completed a one-year MFA in creative writing course from the Writer's Village University, U.S. in Dec 2020. Though I must admit that I am still trying to figure out how and when I can connect all these dots. Have I done any real work? If two years in market research, six years in banking as a branch head, three-plus years of blogging, writing, and publishing a book can be considered as real work, then yes! Where do I live? After spending life like a nomad for sixteen years in Delhi, Bangalore & Mysore, I am back to where it all started from - Kolkata. My favorite things - Books, coffee, travel, food, and my five-year-old son. What is this blog about? Through Sonia's musings, I intend to explore writing in various genres, create social awareness, spread laughter, and give words to emotions. Anything for readers? You can check out my book 'Deal of Death' on Amazon Kindle. If you like fast-paced thrillers, this Detective fiction introducing the woman sleuth, Raya Ray could turn out to be your perfect weekend read.

  1. Aww! That’s such a sweet ode to your first mobile phone. We all loved our first phones. Mine was a Samsung too, though I dont remember the model. It is definitely lying somewhere in a box at our place too.

  2. I had imagined that you were writing to your better half.Never thought that it was a phone that you were writing too.By the way you like the colour blue is it?Had been reading your ebook and there too blue plays a prominent role. Your book got me so engrossed that I could not sleep till I had ‘devoured’ it 😀

    1. Thank you. Glad that I could maintain the suspense till the end.
My son loves blue. I guess his choice is influencing my thoughts though the phone was indeed blue in color.
Pls let me know your thoughts after reading the book.

  3. Surprise twist and ending. My first phone was a Sony Ericsson followed by an iPhone 5 and I now use Samsung. My daughter who is in the seventh grade is pestering me for a mobile phone. But myself and my wife feel it is too early for her. Nice take on the post.

    1. Thank you. Glad I could maintain the suspense till the end. My toddler has taken charge of this non functional phone now. I agree with your thought process that it is too early to get teenagers a phone.

  4. There is always a special attachment with our first phone.. That was a lovely tribute though of I may give a suggestion- you could have tried to keep the identity of the phone a mystery and it would have been a grand revelation at the end!

    1. Very true. I tried to keep the suspense till the end but I guess I gave away at the service centre point. Will keep your suggestion in mind when I write something in the similar domain in future. Thank you for the kind suggestion.

      1. If I may say, it was a great story. The suspense was evident much before the service centre thing . Also the picture you used gave it away. Use something abstract or probably a couple’s pic to trick the readers 🙂

  5. Smart!
I guessed you were writing to your mobile phone 🙂
    First one is sure special.
7 years is a long association indeed! These days, people are ready to change the moment the next model is in the market!

  6. Haha…I could guess it all along that it was going to be phone. Guess what, my first phone was also a Samsung and I know how strange it feels now to think that we used to own one for such a long period of time. Loved your post, Sonia and congratulations on the completion of the 7 day #Barathon! 🙂

  7. Don’t tell me that’s the only 1 phone you changed! The one that I use now is my 6th phone in the past 11 years. But I’ve safely kept the last 3 phones & my laptop in my most treasured memories’ kit. They’re very precious & dear to me as they were the first strands of my relationship with my then boyfriend & I still show them to my husband telling him how special I feel now to see him change from one designation to another. I still work on the same laptop & no matter what technical hitches it has to offer me now, I still refuse to part with it & get it replaced with a new one.

Your feelings for your old phone is what I can totally relate to.

  8. My first phone was a tiny Nokia! I don’t even remember the model number. That phone set the trend for slim and small handsets! Phew! you just reminded me of the sheer number of phones I have used till now!

      1. Thanks for subscribing, Sonia…. And for considering it worthy enough. 😃 I always considered myself a photography enthusiast but I am also discovering a bit of story telling with the help of pictures. Where are you based?
